Nursing

I have nursed two and a half of my kids. Sarah only got half a year due to a horrible breast infection. Even then nursing Sarah was no picnic. She had a strong sucking need and it hurt to nurse her. Latching on especially hurt. Looking back I'm convinced she and I were not doing the whole nursing thing right. This time around I wanted to start off correctly. In the hospital I asked a nurse who I felt comfortable with if she could make sure I was doing things right. First off I made sure she'd helped breastfeeding moms before. For some reason they didn't have a lactation consultant come in to work with moms (I found that odd). My first concern was Rachel's bottom lip. My babies chins are non-existent at birth. So nursing I couldn't tell if her lip sucked in or was turned outward like it was supposed to be.
With the nurse there we went through all the check points to proper latch on:
-Baby's mouth open wide
-Pulling baby towards breast
-Taking in approximately one inch of the areola
-Lips turned outward
I wasn't satisfied even though it looked like Rachel and I were nursing correctly.
I did a youtube search and saw this video:Breastfeedingbabies. It is very well done. Seeing what's going on inside the babies mouth was fantastic. I am clearly a visual learner and was able to make slight changes in helping Rachel latch on and can tell a difference. Nursing is going AWESOME!

I'm so glad you found the information you needed! What a relief (in more ways than one.)!! We can't wait to meet Rachel Ann in person.
