Day 3

Thursday, September 10, 2009

I think Thursdays are going to be a great day each week. I planned it to be a lighter day. This way I can use it for planning, requesting books at the library and, cleaning and errands OR just enjoying the down time.

After morning devotional and choirs Jacob got right to work on his handwriting redo. He had his own incentive and completed it very neatly. He wanted to do more spanish!

I found this website that I really like. It is called Book Adventure "Book Adventure is a FREE reading motivation program for children in grades K-8. Children create their own book lists from over 7,000 recommended titles, take multiple choice quizzes on the books they've read, and earn points and prizes for their literary successes. Book Adventure was created by and is maintained by Sylvan Learning."
I get books at the library. After Jacob reads he gets on to the "Quiz-O-Matic" and takes a quiz earning points towards which ever prize he likes. The prize he is interested in is getting a 6 mo. free subscription to Highlights magazine. Today he took two quizzes earning 200 points towards the 2,000 it takes for his prize. He read Bony Legs, a story about a witch and a little girl, and The Napping House.

After Sarah's morning nap we went for a "bike/walk". It felt great, not the weather, but the walking. I stopped for Sarah along the way. I noticed she was very interested in the butterflies and sat in her stroller just staring at a butterfly as it fluttered from flower to flower.

After lunch the boys and I folded laundry while watching BYU tv. I'm still pretty strict about tv watching in our home, but am trying to make it more normal, if that makes sense. I did turn it on this morning to watch a bit of the news. I was curious about the reaction to Obama's speech on health care, not that I really gained a clear insight.

Anyway, after laundry, it was nice to sit and relax. Michael came up to me with his map of the US and asked me to tell him the names of places. It was a very sweet time sitting on the couch with him. He then got a book for me to read to him and we read it four times.

At 2:00 I took the kids over to a fellow homeschooling friend's home. We are doing a geography together and will switch off on teaching each week. I thought it went really well and will be fun for the kids.

I really enjoyed reading your daily school journaling. It almost makes me think I might like to homeschool my kids some day -- Almost. I'll keep checking your posts to see how it goes.
