DAY 4

Friday September 11, 2009

Today was supposed to be Sports Day with our homeschool group, but we cancelled due to the unpredictability of the weather. It really looked like we were going to get washed out. This semester I am co-leading the sports day group. We rescheduled for two weeks from now.

Our Schedule for today was math and grammar in the morning and history and science in the afternoon. It didn't quit go in that order. The first thing we did, even before devotional was a sewing project. Jacob was filling a requirement for his Faith in God for church under the developing talents, and also doing it as history activity. They made a "game bag" used to gather food. It was a great first sewing project for first time sewers. I made a simple pattern out of wax paper.
Pinning and cutting out fabric.

I had the boys practice on paper without tread. Jacob was slow and steady. He stayed on the line very well.

Michael did a great job too. When he'd get off course, he'd try to get back on.

I didn't have to do anything but give verbal instructions on when to back track and stop. I couldn't get a picture of Michael sewing his bag, since I had to guide the fabric through as Michael put the petal to the metal. I still need to take a picture of their completed game bags.

Science was much better today. We learned about why birds can fly and did an experiment on air pressure to support that information. If you fill a glass full of water and cut a straw to be 1 inch above the water and hold it in place and then blow out of another straw across the top of the first straw the fast air creates less air pressure against the water in the straw than the water in the glass. The result is the water come up and out of the straw and is blow across the table. Jacob loved doing this sneakily at dinner to surprise Steven sitting across the table.
